Gobby!

Category: Web Design, business, linuxJared @ 7:24 am

I have finally stumbled on a collaborative text editor! This in combination with hamachi would make an nice virtual office where everybody could collaborate quite easily. Although I must admit that I haven’t used hamachi since LogMeIn bought them up. But this is a quick way to throw together a vpn and a collabarative editor to work with people on web things no matter if they are running windows, linux, or a Mac.

I’ve been pretty quiet here the last couple of months

Category: Politics, Web Design, businessJared @ 8:11 am

I haven’t been posting much but that is because I haven’t wanted to! Okay so I should say I have been busy and all that which I have in learning cakephp, working on other things like AASPO News Site as part of the launching of the news site I put together this little video and placed it on www.viddler.com. Viddler is pretty cool I really like their user interface much better than google video. So here is the video:

Inkscape UI widgets continued

Category: UI, Web DesignJared @ 3:40 pm

So I spent a bit of time developing some inkscape widgets for ui design. They are not perfect but were easy to create which might explain why nobody else has done it yet. However they are not quite what I want. If you use them you will see that they don’t resize like they should. This is mostly a problem with the border. I will keep playing around with these and hopefully get more added to the collection.

Looking for some UI widgets to use in inkscape for mockups

Category: Web DesignJared @ 12:40 pm

I am posting this in hopes that somebody out there could help me find some UI widgets elements to do some quick interface mock ups inside of inkscape. What I am looking for are some check boxes radio buttons and other common elements that show up on websites.

If I can’t figure out Facebook does that make me Anti-Social?

I have tried on multiple occasions to use face book.  Yet despite all the hype out there about facebook I just don’t get it. Perhaps it does ultimately come back to the fact that I am “anti-social”. Now don’t get me wrong its been great to reconnect with some people from high school. But the truth of the matter is that I couldn’t wait to get out of high school and those that I wanted to stay in contact with I have. Facebook just seems to me like a place where we can go back to and relive the glory days of High School/College. I feel that the future of social networking  is ultimately the blog.  Facebook reminds me to much of AOL it was cool and fun when it first came out. Then I discovered the open web and that was a lot better and much more flexible.

New Job, New Place, no time

Adoma’s Afri Crafts Free inspirational desktop background previewIts been a bit since I have posted. I have good excuses the best excuse is that its my blog and I can post when I want! The other good excuse is that I recently started a new job as an internet coach at Prosper learning. So between the move and getting up to speed here at Prosper I have been pretty busy. I have been working on a few things of note. First off the WidgetNest blog the Incubator has finally launched!

Also I recently helped get Adoma’s Afri Crafts up and running. It is using the drupal CMS and the really cool ubercart module. The image to the left is a sample of some of the neat Free inspirational Desktop wallpapers that you can get there.

I love FireFox!

Category: Web DesignJared @ 10:34 am

Thumbs Up!Firefox is really amazing! I love it extensions. There hasn’t been a time that I thought man I wish firefox would do this that I couldn’t find an extension that did that. For example I was wondering if there was an extension out there that would let me run multiple sessions at once. A little search on Google and I find CookiePie and just like that I can run multiple sessions. This is going to make testing and building websites easier.

A list of extensions that I use for web development:

  • CookiePie
  • Firebug
  • Html Validator
  • Split Browser
  • Tab mix plus
  • Web Developer

All I can say is kudos to all those developers out there that have made Firefox an awesome browser.

Wordpress or Drupal?

Category: Drupal, Web Design, WordpressJared @ 2:34 pm

I am in the process of creating a custom theme in word press for a client. I was going to use Drupal since that is what I have been using for a bit. But Drupal just seemed overkill for this simple business site. It was a lot easier to theme than I thought it would be but this is probably because of the experience I have had in learning to theme Drupal. Side note:
If you are doing any sort of web design and don’t have firefox with firebug you are missing out.

But you may be wondering why I choose Wordpress over Drupal so as follow are my top 3 reasons:

  1. Didn’t see clients site ever expanding into something more that they would need the enhancements that drupal can offer.
  2. Administrative interface in word press is much more polished than Drupal’s. This also makes sense in that Wordpress has concentrated on one thing and been able to focus more energy on the interface (my opinion I have no facts or articles to back this up). Drupal is focused on building A Content Management System. Which is a whole different beast than blogging software.
  3. I wanted to learn more about Wordpress and its capabilities. This was a good project to do that with. I learned alot and was pleasantry surprised by the versatility that Wordpress offers.

Parsing Data

Category: Web Design, fatTrackerJared @ 3:40 pm

In working on the RSS engine for fatTrackr.com it has brought up some interesting dilemmas of the best way to parse data and actually figure out what that data means. It is mostly because numbers are very arbitrary things. Well I am going to spend some time to really figure out some regular expressions. Off to class.

Word Press Themes

Category: Web Design, WordpressJared @ 9:19 am

From the Word Press themes that I have seen out there I feel that something is lacking. I haven’t seen on yet that really says use me. I guess that may because I have a vision in my head of what I want and nobody has made it yet that I have found. Plus who has the time to sort through the thousuands of themes that are out there? Just browsing through them they all seemed to be the same. This may be a function of the wordpress engine itself… We shall find out here once I get the time to dig into this system a little more. I mean for the most part it seems like whenever you hit a site that is running wordpress you can tell right off the bat. I hope to be able to change that.
